Ethan Hawke auditioned for "Unforgiven"

Ethan Hawke tried out for a role in Clint Eastwood's 1992 film Unforgiven, which won Oscars for best film and best director. He later mentioned regretting not securing the part of the young man in the movie during an interview.

Hawke hoped "The Basketball Diaries" would help

At the time of the audition, Hawke had recently appeared in The Basketball Diaries alongside Robin Williams. He believed this role might help him convince Eastwood, who was seeking an actor to play the Schofield Kid.

Eastwood chose Jaimz Woolvett for the role

Clint Eastwood ultimately selected Jaimz Woolvett for the role of the young man. Sam Rockwell also auditioned for the part and was eager to land it, though he did not get the role either.

An ironic career connection emerged later

After Unforgiven, Woolvett joined the cast of White Fang, a TV series based on Jack London’s novel. Interestingly, a film adaptation of the same novel had been released two years earlier, with Ethan Hawke in the lead role.

"Unforgiven" remains a classic western film

Unforgiven is considered one of Clint Eastwood's greatest films and a notable conclusion to the western genre. It is currently available to stream on HBO Max and through video-on-demand services.
