Ghana aims to stop raw mineral exports by 2030

Ghana's president, John Dramani Mahama, has announced the country's goal to halt the export of raw minerals by 2030. This goal was shared during a mining summit in Accra on October 19 and reiterated at an Africa summit in London on October 21.

Target minerals include bauxite and lithium

The plan targets the cessation of exporting raw materials such as bauxite, manganese, iron, and lithium. These minerals are essential for various industries, including aluminum production and battery manufacturing.

President cites economic development as the reason

According to Mahama, selling raw minerals without local processing does not sufficiently benefit Ghana. He argues that this practice limits opportunities to develop factories, create skilled jobs, and acquire industrial technologies.

Ban will be implemented gradually

The president promised a "gradual" ban through "legislative measures," according to Ecofin Agency. The implementation will follow a "schedule taking into account the specific requirements of each mineral," ensuring a careful transition.
