A recent study from Spain, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, suggests that strict education during childhood might influence the development of certain dark personality traits in adulthood. Researchers examined the memories of 370 adults about harsh parenting methods and compared them with the presence of traits such as narcissism, machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism. These traits are often linked to manipulative or antisocial behaviors. The study, led by David Pineda, a professor of forensic psychology at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, highlights how childhood experiences can shape personality. Pineda noted that psychological aggression, such as verbal abuse or emotional neglect, is particularly linked to psychopathy and sadism. Meanwhile, serious physical aggression, such as hitting or physical punishment, was associated with traits like machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. The findings stress the importance of non-violent parenting, as early adversities may leave lasting effects on personality and social behavior. The analysis revealed a connection between strict discipline and the emergence of dark personality traits. Pineda mentioned that the different impacts of parental disciplinary tactics on these traits were unexpected. While psychological aggression was thought to be linked to machiavellianism, serious physical aggression was found to have a more significant influence. These results suggest that the type of discipline used by parents may play a role in shaping specific personality traits in their children. The researchers caution that their findings are correlational and do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. They emphasize the need for long-term studies to confirm these associations over time. Additionally, the study acknowledges the need for more diverse demographic and cultural representation in future research to ensure the findings are widely applicable. Pineda expressed interest in exploring the mechanisms that connect childhood experiences to dark personality traits using longitudinal models.
