The Independent, a British news outlet, will unveil its annual Climate 100 List on 20 September. This event will take place during the United Nations' Summit of the Future in New York, which is part of Climate Week NYC, an annual gathering of climate activists, scientists, and leaders. The Climate 100 List recognizes 100 individuals and organizations worldwide who are making significant contributions to addressing the climate crisis. These honorees are categorized into different sectors, such as business and finance, arts and fashion, and food and agriculture, among others. Each honoree has been selected either for their recent achievements over the past year or for their long-term commitment to environmental causes, including scientific innovations, advocacy for clean water, and efforts to reduce the environmental impact of data centers in the UK and the U.S. This year's list includes five individuals chosen through a public vote, where readers of The Independent’s Climate newsletter nominated their favorites. One of these honorees is Kalpana Arias, an urban gardener who created an app called Glitch that allows users to virtually plant trees in areas in need of greenery. Faraz Khan, an entrepreneur and climate strategist, was recognized for his work with SEED Ventures, an organization focused on creating social and environmental impact through business. Christine Egan, the founder and CEO of CLASP, was acknowledged for her efforts in reducing energy waste in household appliances. Pam Warhurst, co-founder of Incredible Edibles, a group that promotes growing food on unused public land, and Cindy Forde, author of Bright New World: Building a Better Planet, were also included in the list. The Climate 100 event will be hosted in New York by Geordie Greig, The Independent’s Editor-in-Chief, and will feature a keynote speech by David Miliband. Miliband previously served as the British foreign secretary and is now the president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a global humanitarian organization. The event highlights the importance of collaboration between media, activists, and leaders in tackling climate change. The Climate 100 List is sponsored by Octopus Energy, a renewable energy company based in the UK. The announcement of the Climate 100 List underscores the growing global focus on climate action and the role of individuals and organizations in driving meaningful change. By spotlighting these efforts, The Independent aims to inspire further action and awareness around environmental issues. The event serves as a reminder that the fight against climate change involves a wide range of contributors, from scientists and entrepreneurs to artists and community organizers.
