New AirPods model released

Apple has launched the fifth generation of its AirPods, introducing new features and enhancements while keeping the price competitive. This model continues Apple’s strategy of balancing innovation with affordability.

Key features and technology

The AirPods 5 use the H2 chip, which was previously used in the AirPods Pro 2. They include active noise cancellation (ANC), spatial audio, and improved sound quality. Apple claims the ANC is 50% more effective than on the AirPods 4, though user testing suggests the improvement is less noticeable.

Pricing and versions

The AirPods 5 come in two versions: one with a wireless charging case without MagSafe for CHF 119 (149€), and one with MagSafe charging for CHF 139 (169€). The MagSafe version includes a 5-hour battery life with ANC on, 7 hours without it, and volume control on the earbuds’ stems.

Performance and user feedback

Users report improved audio quality compared to the AirPods 4, with richer and more detailed sound. The microphone quality remains similar to the previous model, which is adequate for calls but not ideal for podcast recording. The ANC is present and functional, though the improvement over the AirPods 4 is less significant than advertised.

Additional features and limitations

The AirPods 5 include a new equalizer, live translation (in beta), and volume adjustment on the stems. The live translation feature supports basic language translation but has a noticeable delay. The equalizer is appreciated but not revolutionary. The AirPods 5 lack a heart rate sensor, which is available on the AirPods Pro 3.

User reception and value

The AirPods 5 have been positively received for their improved sound quality, battery life, and features, offering good value for money. They are considered a solid upgrade for users with older models, especially those without ANC, though the ANC improvement is not as impactful as expected.
