Aung San Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris (also known as Htein Lin), has written a new letter to Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, urging for his mother’s release. The letter was delivered in person to the Myanmar embassy in London on Tuesday. In it, Aris stated that his mother has been held by the military junta for many years and that her detention is effectively a form of execution at her age. Suu Kyi, now 81, has had no contact with the outside world since writing a letter to her son nearly two and a half years ago. In April, Aris launched a campaign demanding proof of Suu Kyi’s life, which led to her being allowed to meet with a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in August. Aris called this meeting “only the beginning” and continued to push for her full release. He expressed a deep longing to see his mother, speak with her, and spend time with her while they still can. Suu Kyi has been in detention since February 2021, after the military ousted the democratically elected government she led. Her exact location and health have been difficult to determine due to the limited contact she has had with the outside world. She has not met with any foreign leaders or envoys since her detention began. Aris expressed relief at finally having proof that Suu Kyi is alive, but he also expressed anger over her being held unjustly and in solitary confinement for more than five years, which has impacted her mental and physical health. While the Burmese government released photographs showing Suu Kyi as healthy, Aris emphasized that the pressure to secure her complete release must continue. The ICRC confirmed that the visit with Suu Kyi followed their standard procedures for visiting people held in custody. A documentary titled Cancelled: The Rise and Fall of Aung San Suu Kyi, released in December 2024 by The Independent, highlights the struggles of the former leader. Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for being a symbol of freedom in Burma, and her son accepted the award on her behalf while she was under house arrest.
