A new children's book titled Passions or Addictions? explores the idea of telling the difference between a passion and an addiction. The story follows Felix, a young video game enthusiast who finds it hard to leave his screens and go outside, as his mother asks him to. During a walk, Felix meets others who are deeply involved in their own interests—like a jogger glued to his smartphone, a child who never lets go of his diabolos (a spinning toy), and teenagers who are always eating chips and sweets. These encounters help Felix think about how people can become too absorbed in their hobbies or habits. The book is written by Benoît Broyart and Baptiste Fiche, a psychologist who specializes in supporting children with mental health challenges. Their goal is to use everyday situations to help young readers understand the importance of balance in life. The story is designed to be relatable, showing how even positive activities can become problematic if they take over someone's life. Laurent Richard is the illustrator of the book, bringing the characters and settings to life with colorful and expressive visuals. Passions or Addictions? is part of the "Et si on parlait de..." collection, which aims to open up difficult topics for discussion with children. Along with the book, there is a free educational booklet for teachers to help guide classroom conversations on the subject. Published by Hygée editions, Passions or Addictions? will be available for purchase starting on 12 November. The book is intended to spark dialogue among children, parents, and educators about the value of balance in daily life and the importance of recognizing when a hobby becomes too much.
