Costco Wholesale, a well-known membership-based retail warehouse club, is expanding its presence across the United States by opening 10 new stores within the next two months. The new locations will be spread across several states, including California, New York, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Idaho, Arizona, Virginia, and Wisconsin. This expansion is part of Costco's broader strategy to grow its footprint by opening more than 30 new stores each year in the coming years. The first five stores are set to open in October in Lee’s Summit, Missouri; The Colony, Texas; Amherst, New York; Lawrence, Kansas; and Camarillo, California. Additional locations will follow in November in South Meridian, Idaho; Vallejo, California; Chandler, Arizona; Newport News, Virginia; and Franklin, Wisconsin. These new stores are expected to bring more convenience and savings to local shoppers, as Costco is known for offering bulk goods at discounted prices. Costco’s CEO, Ron Vachris, highlighted the company’s focus on expanding its real estate operations during an earnings call in late May. He mentioned that Costco plans to open 26 new stores in its 2026 fiscal year, which ended in August. In that fiscal year, Costco reported net sales of $297.3 billion, a 10.2 percent increase from the previous year. Despite rising grocery prices—up 2.2 percent in August—Costco has continued to attract customers, who benefit from its bulk pricing model. Consumer science professor Dominique Jones from the University of Houston noted that buying in bulk can lead to better unit prices, making Costco an attractive option for budget-conscious shoppers. Additionally, Costco’s gas stations offer discounted fuel through its Kirkland Signature brand, which provides savings amid rising fuel costs. In August, the average price of gas increased by 27.4 percent compared to the previous year. Costco’s stock has experienced significant growth in recent years, though it has recently declined after reaching a peak of over $1,000 per share in May. As of Tuesday afternoon, the stock was trading at approximately $900 per share. This fluctuation reflects the dynamic nature of the stock market and the company's ongoing expansion efforts.
