Besançon prepares to restore its historic 1884 Saint-Ferjeux organ, a unique instrument with a storied past and complex restoration needs.
Historic organ in Besançon to be restored
The historic organ in Besançon’s Basilica of Saint-Ferjeux, built in 1884, is set to undergo a major restoration starting in 2027. The project is being led by the Friends of the Saint-Ferjeux Organs Association, which has been working to preserve the instrument’s legacy.Organ faces multiple issues
The organ has suffered from structural and mechanical damage, including deterioration of its pipes, vault, bellows, and manchon, as well as infestation by wood-boring insects. Organist Laurent Agazzi noted that the current sound does not match the intended melodic quality created by Jehan Alain in the 1930s.Expert involvement in restoration
Christian Lutz, an expert who previously worked on the organ restoration at Notre-Dame de Paris, described the Saint-Ferjeux organ as "exceptional." The restoration will be carried out by organ builder Hubert Braye following Lutz’s guidance.Organ's complex history
The organ’s history includes several expansions. Initially installed by priest Jacques Jules Marquiset, it was later expanded with additional keyboards. In 1930, Jules Bossier added a second keyboard, and in 1932, a third was added, with further work advised by Jehan Alain in 1939.Previous restorations and upgrades
A major restoration was completed in 1988, with a grand inauguration attended by organist Marie-Claire Alain. In 2015, the third keyboard was reinforced, and in 2019, the motor was replaced using funds from the association.Funding sources for the project
The restoration is estimated to cost 176,592 euros, with funding coming from multiple sources. The Heritage Foundation will contribute 83,339 euros, the City of Besançon 50,592 euros, and the association itself 2,861 euros. Michel Krucien emphasized the need to repair the crumbling vault above the organ.Community and historical connections
The association is also commemorating the centenary of the birth of Marie-Claire Alain with an exhibition in the basilica. Andrée Grenier-Boley, the exhibition’s originator, highlighted Alain’s significance as a renowned organist. The association members have a deep connection to the organ, using it in their choir singing and neighborhood activities.Basilica's access and future plans
The basilica is open on specific days and will close after the last mass on November 1, 2026, due to the lack of a heating system. The association hopes for continued support from local officials, including Ludovic Fagaut, following the recent elections.
