Microsoft is set to integrate a built-in browser into its Copilot application for Windows and macOS users, beginning in late November. The feature has been in testing since March through the Windows Insider program and was previously available in early access. The integration allows users to open links directly within Copilot, displaying the web page in a panel to the right of the chat interface. This panel can handle multiple tabs and expand to full-screen mode if needed. The goal is to let users interact with web content and continue their conversation with the AI chatbot without switching between apps. However, Microsoft does not prevent users from opening links in their preferred browsers, though they would need to use a context menu or manually copy the URL to external browsers like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. The integration of a browser within Copilot means the application will gather and store data locally on the user's device. This includes browsing history, cookies, saved passwords, and information entered into forms, such as email addresses or postal addresses. Additionally, the browser can collect DRM (Digital Rights Management) data used by streaming services. If synchronization is enabled, Copilot can share this information—like passwords and saved addresses—with Microsoft Edge via the company's cloud. The app can also import cookies from Edge every time it starts. These features aim to make interactions with Copilot more seamless and personalized. Microsoft also collects diagnostic data to help identify issues and improve its products and services. For users with consumer accounts, data from Copilot, including conversation history and saved memories, may be used to personalize advertisements and offers. While some data is stored locally on the user's device, the combination of all this information in a single environment controlled by Microsoft raises privacy concerns. Although Microsoft currently claims it will not exploit certain types of data, these assurances could change in the future, depending on updates to its privacy policy or terms of use. Users are advised to review and adjust their privacy settings accordingly.
