Monet's "Iris" sells for 50 million euros

The artwork Iris by Claude Monet was sold for 50 million euros at an auction held by Sotheby's on October 22. This sale marked the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction in France.

Monet's final experiments in Giverny

The painting, from the later period of Monet's career, is considered to reveal the final experiments of the painter, which were precursors to the rise of abstraction. Painted in Giverny, the artwork depicts yellow flowers that shimmer like stars against a background of azure sky reflected on the surface of a pond.

Rare display during the auction

The painting was part of the sale Le Temps retrouvé : la collection Schlumberger, which was highlighted by being graciously displayed to visitors in the salons of the prestigious auction house during the art week. The artwork had never been exhibited before and was only known through photographs.

Live performance paired with the painting

Prior to the auction, Sotheby's invited musician Nicolas Godin, half of the legendary group Air, to perform live in front of the artwork. Godin performed "The Border," a track from his solo album Concrete and Glass, released in 2020, accompanied by Adélaïde Ferrière on marimba.

Art and music in unexpected dialogue

The performance, captured by Blogothèque, created an unexpected dialogue between Monet's masterpiece and the electro-pop flights of the musician. It demonstrated that, 100 years after his death, Monet continues to influence contemporary creation across various mediums.
