Legal dispute ends without trial

Didier Deschamps has decided to drop his legal case against journalist Daniel Riolo, ending the dispute without a trial. The former France national team coach, who recently handed over the reins to Zinedine Zidane, chose not to continue the legal battle.

Dispute over Benzema's injury management

The conflict began when Riolo accused Deschamps of mishandling Karim Benzema's injury during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Deschamps claimed these accusations were defamatory and sought legal action against Riolo.

Initial court ruling and appeal

Riolo was initially found not guilty in January of last year, but Deschamps' team appealed the decision. A hearing was scheduled for January 13, 2027, by the Paris court of appeal. However, the court determined that while Riolo's comments were harsh, they did not meet the legal threshold for defamation.

Withdrawal from the case

After consulting with his legal team, Deschamps decided to withdraw from the case. His decision was communicated to the court on September 21 last year, and the withdrawal was to be officially recorded during a relay hearing set for November 4 next year.

Trial will not proceed

According to L'Équipe, the appeal trial between Deschamps and Riolo will not take place. The former France team coach's withdrawal from the case means the legal proceedings have been formally closed.
