Matthew Brennan secured his fifth individual stage victory in the 2026 Vuelta a España by winning the 17th stage on Wednesday, September 9. The British cyclist, riding for the Visma-Lease a Bike team, triumphed in a sprint finish in Seville after a 185-kilometer race from Dos Hermanas to the capital of Andalusia. This victory adds to his previous win in the 16th stage in Palos de la Frontera, marking a strong performance in his first-ever Grand Tour. Enric Mas of Movistar maintained his position as the overall race leader, retaining the red jersey after the stage. The race saw the peloton, or main group of riders, catch up with the last breakaway rider, Enzo Paleni of Groupama-FDJ, just three kilometers from the finish line. This allowed the sprinters to contest the final kilometers in a tightly packed group. In the final sprint, Brennan edged out his rivals, finishing ahead of Jordi Meeus of Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe and Magnus Cort of Uno-X. Three French cyclists also performed well, with Axel Laurance finishing sixth, Hugo Hofstetter ninth, and Bryan Coquard tenth. This stage victory marks the seventh overall for the Visma-Lease a Bike team in the 2026 edition of the Vuelta. At just 21 years old, Brennan has already made a significant impact in his debut Grand Tour. His victories in stages 2, 5, 11, 16, and 17 highlight his strong sprinting abilities and consistency in high-pressure situations. With his performances, Brennan has established himself as a rising star in professional cycling.
