TalkTalk, the UK’s fourth-largest broadband provider, is nearing the completion of two major sales—one involving its consumer business and the other its wholesale operations, known as PXC. The company aims to finalize these deals soon in an effort to save around 900 jobs. TalkTalk was founded in 2003 by Charles Dunstone as a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse, but its customer base has dropped significantly, from 4 million in 2019 to about 1.5 million today. The company is currently struggling with high levels of debt and is seeking to restructure its operations by selling off key parts of its business.
TalkTalk is close to finalizing a £100 million deal to sell its consumer broadband and mobile services to Opus Broadband. Separately, its wholesale arm, PXC, which supplies broadband services to other businesses, is expected to be sold to Octopus Investments for an undisclosed amount. Opus Broadband has emphasized that its main focus is to ensure that all TalkTalk customers remain connected and that the company’s employees are not affected by the transition. Octopus Investments has not made any official comments on the deal.
If the sales are completed, TalkTalk’s current owners—including its founder Charles Dunstone—will have to write off roughly £1 billion in debt. The company’s wholesale division, PXC, also provides services to the UK Ministry of Defence, though the sale is not expected to disrupt these operations. The MoD’s work with TalkTalk is handled through a third-party reseller, and regulations require that at least one other telecommunications provider is always available to ensure continuity of service.
Karen Egan, a telecommunications analyst at Enders, told the BBC that she does not expect significant disruption for TalkTalk customers if the deal with Opus Broadband moves forward. She noted that the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, is likely to oversee a smooth transition, particularly for the 250,000 vulnerable customers who rely on TalkTalk’s services. This regulatory oversight is intended to minimize any potential impact on customers during the transition period.
