A woman who repeatedly lied to police to cover up the killing and dismemberment of her abusive husband has received an additional 12 months in prison. Nirmeen Noufl was sentenced on Friday after admitting in August to killing her husband, Mamdouh, in what she described as excessive self-defense. She said she was being choked and physically assaulted in their Sydney home at the time of the incident. Noufl, 55, has been in custody since her arrest in October 2024, when she was first charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Prosecutors accepted her plea after she provided details about the disposal of her husband’s body, which made it difficult to pursue a murder charge.
The court heard that Noufl endured a traumatic childhood and experienced severe domestic abuse from her husband, which the judge said lessened the gravity of the killing. However, the dismemberment of Mamdouh’s body was a key factor in the sentencing. Justice Peter Hamill described the way the body was disposed of as “as thorough as it was brutal” and noted that the actions after the killing were “remarkable and chilling.” He said the conduct was relevant to the issue of remorse. The judge also acknowledged that the relationship was marked by violence, psychological manipulation, and coercive control.
Noufl wept in court as Hamill outlined the history of abuse she suffered, both as a child and in her marriage. The judge suggested that Mamdouh’s family would be disappointed with the sentence. “I hope all of you understand … there will seem to be a gap between the loss you have suffered forever and the sentence I impose,” Hamill said. Mamdouh, who held conservative Islamic views, was described as controlling of his wife and daughters. Just days before his death, he told Noufl he had met a woman in Egypt and intended to marry her, but he refused to grant her a divorce.
Noufl told psychiatrists that her husband had choked her and pinned her to the ground during a violent argument. She described her feelings toward him as one of long-standing resentment, saying, “All my life … he just treated me like shit, spat at me.” After the killing, she dismembered his body with a saw and disposed of the remains in garbage bags across southwest Sydney. His body was never found, and her claim that she stabbed him only once could not be tested. One of Noufl’s daughters said she would cancel her overseas life to support her mother after her release. Noufl will be eligible for parole in October 2027.
