A 33-year-old woman died in a tragic collision with a car during a family bike ride in Salornay-sur-Guye, a small town in the Saône-et-Loire department of France, on Thursday. The incident happened when she was riding with her two young children, aged 8 and 10, on the road near her home. According to prosecutor Anne-Lise Furstoss of Mâcon, the driver, also in his 30s, was reportedly speeding excessively. The gendarmes described the crash as extremely violent, with the cyclist being thrown from her bike and sustaining a severe injury that resulted in the loss of an arm. She died at the scene. After the collision, the driver stopped not far from where the accident occurred. The victim’s husband then approached him and attacked him with a utility knife he had on his person, striking him multiple times. The driver was injured and taken by helicopter to the Dijon University Hospital. His condition is not considered critical, though he remains under medical care. The Mâcon prosecutor's office has launched two separate investigations into the incident: one for road homicide and another for the use of a weapon in an act of violence. The driver, who is still in the hospital recovering from surgery, has not yet been placed in custody. Investigators are conducting blood tests to determine if he had consumed alcohol or narcotics at the time of the accident. They are also retrieving data from the vehicle's speed calculator to help establish the exact speed he was traveling at. This incident has raised concerns about road safety and the potential consequences of speeding, especially in residential areas. Authorities are likely to review the circumstances of the crash and the subsequent events to determine the full legal implications for all parties involved.
