At least two people died in an accident involving a boat and a buoy near Saint-Cyprien in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of southern France. The incident occurred in the late morning around 11 o'clock when a pilot was ejected from the boat for an unknown reason. The boat then reversed and collided with an inflatable buoy carrying passengers. Seven individuals, all vacationers with the Union Nationale des Centres Sportifs de Plein Air (UCPA), were involved in the accident. According to the prosecutor of Perpignan, Jérôme Bourrier, the pilot was thrown off the boat after being unbalanced by a wave. This caused the boat to become uncontrollable and crash into the pilot and those on the buoy. The 31-year-old pilot died after being ejected, and a 29-year-old woman also lost her life. A young man in his early twenties is in serious condition with a "very serious vital prognosis," the prosecutor said. Another person suffered serious injuries to their arm and leg, though it is unclear if this was the same individual. Five others were in shock and received emergency psychological support. Christelle Tadjer, manager of the "Temple Beach" restaurant-bar in Saint-Cyprien, said the boat had passed by with a buoy a few days earlier and had been sailing "completely normally" near the swimming area. She noted that the boat's speed was normal and that the movements were not excessive. Everyone at the scene was quickly evacuated to allow rescuers to intervene. Axel Lamotte, a spokesperson for the federation of lifeguards, said such accidents are "very rare" and typically occur "beyond 300 meters," which is outside the area monitored by lifeguards. The prosecutor noted that the boat's electrical circuit breaker, which is designed to stop the engine if the pilot falls into the water, was left on the boat and not attached to the pilot. Approximately twenty firefighters and lifeguards, along with the nautical brigade and the maritime investigation brigade from Marseille, were mobilized. An investigation for "involuntary homicide" is currently underway.
