Lowe’s has made history by becoming the first major U.S. home improvement retailer to offer same-day drone delivery through its partnership with DoorDash. This service is currently available to customers of Lowe’s store in Matthews, North Carolina, and allows for the delivery of small items—up to 2.5 pounds—such as hand tools, paint, tape, and cleaning products. These items can reach a customer’s home in as little as 20 minutes, offering a quick and efficient way to get needed supplies. Seemantini Godbole, Lowe’s chief information and AI officer, emphasized that the company is focused on removing obstacles in the home improvement process. “We want to make it easier for customers to enjoy their homes,” she said. The company aims to use technology to eliminate friction, enabling customers to complete their projects more efficiently. Lowe’s is not the only major brand exploring drone delivery. Amazon and Walmart have already launched or expanded drone delivery services. Walmart began its drone delivery program in northern Arkansas in 2021 and later expanded it to Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, completing over one million deliveries by 2026. Amazon launched its Amazon Prime Air service in California in 2022 and has since expanded it to seven states. The company plans to introduce the service in Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and New York in the near future. Consumer interest in drone delivery is growing. A 2024 survey by the consulting firm McKinsey found that nearly half of consumers—53 percent—said they would switch retailers if drone delivery was available. Drones offer two key advantages: speed and the ability to avoid traffic congestion. According to a 2024 analysis by the accounting firm PWC, drones are especially valuable in rural areas, where traditional delivery methods are often too costly or logistically challenging. PWC predicted that drones could replace up to 389 billion vehicle deliveries by 2034, significantly improving delivery efficiency and reducing costs.
