Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is offering early access to its DMZ mode, a gameplay feature that allows players to engage in open-world combat and extraction-style shooting. Details about this feature were shared in a blog post by Activision and Infinity Ward, the developers of the game. The early access for the campaign of Modern Warfare 4 begins on Friday, October 16, for those who pre-ordered the standard or Vault Edition of the game on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and/or Xbox Series X/S. The DMZ mode will be available to these players starting on Tuesday, October 20, with the official release of the game set for Friday, October 23. The game will be available on PC via Steam and Battle.net, as well as on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on October 23. DMZ mode was first introduced in Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and offers a unique shooting experience where players can explore an open world, engage in combat, and extract valuable items. However, the mode was developed in the months after the game’s release and was ultimately considered disappointing. Its support ended by the end of 2023, but Activision and Infinity Ward are now giving it another chance with a more refined version in Modern Warfare 4. In the blog post, Infinity Ward describes this new version as "the ultimate extraction shooter experience" of the series, promising continuous progression in the open-world combat zone known as the Hajin Exclusion Zone. Joe Cecot, the creative director of multiplayer at Infinity Ward, mentioned in a behind-the-scenes video that the development of the DMZ beta was an interesting process. The team had to make certain choices and had some ideas they could not implement at the time. However, since the release of the last game, they have learned a lot and created an open world that is both accessible and fun. Players can fight, explore, make friends, and engage in combat in this environment. While there were limitations in the past, the team was motivated after completing the last game and now knows exactly what they want to achieve. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to release on October 23 on PC and consoles. Until then, players can get a first glimpse of the DMZ gameplay through a released trailer and the latest information shared earlier this week. Those with early access will be able to try out the DMZ mode a few days before the official release, but the main multiplayer mode will only be available on the release date.
