Jean-Michel Blanquer's role in education reform

Jean-Michel Blanquer, who became the Minister of National Education and Youth in May 2017 and currently leads the association Terra Academia, played a central role in reforming France’s general and technological baccalaureate system. He also launched the Parcoursup platform, which has since become a point of contention among high schools.

Criticism of the Parcoursup platform

High schools in France have heavily criticized the Parcoursup platform, which is used to manage student applications for higher education. The system has drawn complaints from educators, who argue it has created new challenges for students and parents navigating the college admissions process.

Blanquer defends Parcoursup and calls for reasoned debate

In an interview with Sud Radio, Blanquer defended Parcoursup and urged critics to engage in "reasonable and rational" discussions about its shortcomings. He asked critics to identify "in which country there is something that would be the best to imitate" and emphasized the importance of international comparisons in evaluating alternatives.

Blanquer acknowledges concerns but links stress to broader issues

He acknowledged concerns about stress and disorientation among parents and students but argued that the stress about the future was not directly caused by Parcoursup. He suggested that removing the platform would not resolve the underlying issue of where students would register for higher studies.

Reforms include adding support for students

Blanquer noted that reforms have included adding a second main teacher in the final year of high school to assist with information and orientation. This measure aims to provide additional support to students as they make important decisions about their future.

Parcoursup was introduced to address flaws in the previous system

Blanquer recalled that before Parcoursup, there was a system called APB (Admission Post-Bac), which had its own flaws, including cases where students with less relevant baccalaureate qualifications were accepted over more qualified candidates. Parcoursup was introduced to better align students’ expectations with the offerings in higher education.
