Nathalie experiences a slow decline in her health over several months, unsure of the cause behind her symptoms. What she initially thinks is a temporary problem soon becomes more serious. She begins to feel constantly tired, struggles with eating, and loses weight. As her symptoms worsen, she undergoes a series of medical tests: blood tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), abdominal scans, and a colonoscopy. The diagnosis is Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. This long-term illness requires careful management and regular medical care. As the disease progresses, Nathalie faces severe fecal incontinence, which impacts her daily life for an entire year. Faced with both physical and emotional exhaustion, doctors suggest a colostomy as a treatment. A digestive colostomy involves connecting a section of the intestine to the skin, allowing waste to be collected in a bag. Nathalie’s stools are now collected in a bag attached to her abdomen. Maintaining this medical equipment has become part of her daily routine. Every 24 hours, she replaces the bag, following a specific hygiene protocol. In her bathroom, she removes the old bag, cleans the area around the stoma with water and a pad, and then attaches a new bag using a circular base that fits her body. This routine has become automatic, and she performs it without difficulty at home. Despite the challenges, Nathalie has found ways to embrace her new reality with simplicity and humor. She has helped reduce the stigma surrounding digestive equipment and the topic of bodily functions. The presence of the abdominal bag sometimes raises questions about the emotional and sexual lives of people with colostomies. For Nathalie, however, the device has never been a barrier in her relationships. The secure adhesion of the base prevents leaks, allowing her to enjoy intimate moments with confidence. Inspired by her experience, she has also entered the Miss Planète Centre-Val-de-Loire contest. Wearing her evening gown and regional scarf, she proudly displays her colostomy bag on stage, showing that beauty is not defined by the absence of medical devices. Beyond managing her care, the colostomy has given Nathalie a renewed sense of freedom and joy. Previously, she worried about sudden pain or incontinence during car trips, but those anxieties have disappeared. She has also expanded her diet, no longer avoiding fiber or coffee, and now enjoys a more varied meal plan. When going to the beach, she carries an emergency kit with spare equipment and wears a two-piece swimsuit without hiding her bag. She meets others’ curious glances with kindness, understanding that seeing someone with a colostomy bag can be surprising. By pursuing her personal goals, Nathalie shows that it is possible to live fully, travel, and thrive despite living with a chronic illness.
