Clayface leads box office debut

The film Clayface opened at the top of the American box office this weekend, earning $24 million during its first weekend in theaters. It outperformed the documentary You Can See Everything and the animated film Wildwood.

Box office compared to similar films

However, Clayface’s opening is significantly lower than similar films such as Joker: Folie à Deux ($37.6 million), The Lego Batman Movie ($53 million), and the first Joker ($96.2 million) in 2019. The film has a reduced budget of $45 million, excluding marketing, and with a global launch of $43 million, it could break even if it retains audience interest in the second week.

Documentary maintains strong position

The documentary You Can See Everything confirmed its position in second place with $19.5 million earned, an increase of 25% compared to last week. The film, which followed the founder of the dubious company Theranos before her incarceration for fraud, is gaining attention and is well positioned for the Oscars.

Stop-motion film underperforms

The stop-motion film Wildwood from the studio Laika, an ambitious $100 million production, received enthusiastic critical and public reception but only recorded $11.6 million for its debut. The film’s reception has started poorly despite its high production value.

Street Fighter sees steep decline

Finally, after its small first place last week, the film Street Fighter collapsed in the rankings with only $8.6 million for its second weekend, a heavy decline of 72%. The adaptation of the Capcom game has reached a global total of $80 million and is unlikely to surpass the recent Mortal Kombat II ($129.5 million worldwide).
