Google has announced a major investment in Finland, amounting to 13 billion euros (approximately $15.1 billion) over the next two years. This funding will support infrastructure projects in southern and central Finland, including the development of data centers and related facilities such as power plants, dams, and the electrical grid. Google has partnered with several local firms, including Fingrid, Business Finland, Fortum, and Valorem, to carry out these initiatives. Among these partnerships is a 22-year agreement with Fortum to supply energy from the Loviisa nuclear power plant and a contract with Valorem to provide electricity from a wind farm in the eastern part of the country.
According to Google's chief financial officer, Ruth Porat, this investment marks the largest single investment by the company in Europe. Antti Järvinen, Google's representative in Finland, stated that the project is one of the most significant investments in Finland’s industrial history, underscoring its importance for the country's economy and infrastructure.
The investment is projected to create 37,000 "induced" jobs, with 16,000 of those positions in construction. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized the value of these employment opportunities, especially considering Finland’s history of relatively high unemployment. However, the projects have drawn criticism from environmental groups and some local communities, who are concerned about potential environmental impacts, including resource depletion and the effects on local ecosystems.
In addition to infrastructure development, Google has pledged to improve local communities in the towns of Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. The company will fund programs aimed at upskilling and education, as well as invest in renewable energy projects such as onshore wind capacity and a 94-megawatt battery storage facility. Google is also focusing on environmental restoration, including the regeneration of native forests and wetlands, the creation of accessible recreational trails, and the development of public saunas and fishing piers, aiming to enhance both the natural environment and community well-being.
