Appian Capital invests in critical minerals

Appian Capital Advisory, a British investment firm managing about 5 billion USD, announced on October 13 that it plans to invest 2.5 billion USD over five years in critical minerals. These minerals are essential for technologies like electronics, renewable energy systems, and electric vehicles.

Namibia projects under development

Appian holds majority stakes in two projects in Namibia: the Rosh Pinah Zinc mine and the Omitiomire copper project. In June 2023, it acquired 89.96% of Rosh Pinah Zinc and aims to complete its RP2.0 expansion, which is nearly finished.

Rosh Pinah expansion details

The expansion of Rosh Pinah Zinc will increase the mine's processing capacity from 0.7 million to 1.4 million tons annually. A 150 million USD loan from Standard Bank Namibia is financing the project, with a targeted annual zinc production of 170 million pounds.

Omitiomire copper project

Appian acquired 95% of the Omitiomire copper project in May 2026. The project requires over 400 million USD in capital to reach production, aiming for an annual output of 26,000 to 30,000 tons of copper over 16 years.

Past investments in Africa

Appian previously invested in Roxgold in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire but exited after Roxgold merged with Fortuna Silver Mines in 2021. It also invested in the Ngualla rare earth project in Tanzania, selling its stake in 2022.

Recent financing in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire

In 2025, Appian provided 175 million USD to Asante Gold in Ghana for the Bibiani and Chirano gold mines. It also gave 150 million USD to Atlantic Group in Côte d'Ivoire to acquire the Tongon gold mine from Barrick Mining.

Africa director and regional focus

In 2023, Appian created an Africa director position for Khathushelo Mapasa, highlighting its focus on countries like Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia, as well as parts of East and West Africa. The company employs more than 1,000 people on the continent.

Africa-focused fund announcement

In October 2025, Appian announced a 1 billion USD fund with the IFC to finance critical mineral projects in emerging markets, with Africa as a key region. The company is also exploring new opportunities beyond its current investments.
