Nvidia's DLSS 5 brings neural rendering, enhanced ray tracing, and improved fluidity to gaming, with NBA 2K27 as the first title to feature its new lighting and material technologies.
DLSS reaches new versions in 2026
DLSS, a key software tool developed by Nvidia for video gaming, has evolved significantly in 2026 with the release of versions 4.5 and 5. The technology, initially designed to increase performance through image reconstruction, now includes enhancements in fluidity, image generation, ray tracing quality, and a new focus on neural rendering to improve lighting and materials.DLSS 5 launches with NBA 2K27
The latest iteration, DLSS 5, was launched in September with NBA 2K27 and is set to be available in Hogwarts Legacy through an update on November 5. This version introduces several new features and optimizations aimed at improving both visual fidelity and performance in compatible games.Super Resolution upgrades with new model
The Super Resolution feature of DLSS has been upgraded with a second-generation Transformer model, aiming to improve the stability of details and clarity in motion while reducing ghosting. This new version works on all GeForce RTX cards, from RTX 20 to RTX 50, and has been available since January in over 400 games and applications via the NVIDIA app.Image generation improvements on RTX 50
Image generation has also seen improvements with two major updates accessible on GeForce RTX 50 in compatible games. Multi Frame Generation (MFG) can now be pushed up to 6X, generating five additional images per image rendered by the game engine. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation automatically adjusts the multiplier in real-time to target a specific frame rate.Ray Reconstruction enhanced for better clarity
Ray Reconstruction, which uses AI to reduce noise in images calculated using ray tracing, has also been enhanced with a second-generation Transformer model, resulting in more precise lighting, better image stability, and greater clarity during motion. These improvements contribute to more realistic and visually appealing game environments.New 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology
DLSS 5 introduces a new technology called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, designed to enrich lighting and materials in real-time. This technology works with images produced by the game engine and allows for more natural reactions of materials to lighting, with enhanced contact shadows and object relief. Studios retain control over the process, able to choose models, adjust effect intensity, and target or exclude specific elements.Performance boost for 3D-Guided Neural Rendering
Nvidia reports that the 3D-Guided Neural Rendering model, deployed on October 16, is now ten times faster than at its initial announcement. It halves the GPU cost of neural rendering and reduces video memory consumption by 20% in 4K, with comparable visual quality. In NBA 2K27, this translates to a frame rate up to 1.4 times higher than that achieved with the September model.Compatibility varies across hardware and games
Compatibility with DLSS features varies by hardware and game. 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is available on GeForce RTX 50 and RTX Spark laptops, as well as via GeForce NOW in compatible games. Image Generation Performance Mode is accessible on GeForce RTX 40, RTX 50, and RTX Spark laptops in compatible games. Multi Frame Generation 6X and dynamic mode are available on GeForce RTX 50 in compatible games.New beta setting for performance optimization
Nvidia has also introduced a new beta setting: a Performance mode for image generation, which reduces part of the calculation with some compromises on visual quality. In tests with Cyberpunk 2077 on an RTX 5060 8 Go in 1440p with medium ray tracing and Super Resolution in Balanced mode, the gain increases with the chosen multiplier, reaching up to 36% in 6X compared to Quality mode.Updates to RTX Remix for mod creators
RTX Remix, Nvidia's tool for mod creators, has also received updates with neural rendering and Performance mode available since October 23. Examples of projects using these features include Fallout 4 RTX and Mirror's Edge RTX, both still in development. Nvidia plans to officially open 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to GeForce RTX 40 users once the model is optimized on RTX 50, though no specific date has been announced.
