Multiple trade union organizations in the Loire-Atlantique department have announced plans for a strike and demonstrations on Tuesday, September 29, in several cities. The unions involved include CGT, FO, UNSA, CFDT, Solidaires, CFE/CGFC, and FSU. In Nantes, a gathering is set for 10:00 AM at the "mirror of water," a popular public square. A similar meeting will take place at the same time at the town hall in Châteaubriant. In Saint-Nazaire, a demonstration is scheduled for 10:30 AM in front of the town hall. The strike and demonstrations are focused on addressing key issues such as salary increases, working conditions, and the quality of public services. Public sector workers, including firefighters, caregivers, teachers, and those involved in public service missions, are participating in the strike, according to CGT 44 in a press release. The unions have several demands, including raising salaries, increasing the value of the "point"—a unit used to calculate pay in the French public sector—providing a 400-euro bonus, achieving salary equality between men and women, and either allowing retirement at age 60 or abolishing the "care day," a policy requiring some workers to take unpaid leave for caregiving. CGT 44 emphasized in its statement that "Reindustrialize, successfully achieve the urgent environmental transition, meet needs: this requires significant investments." The union criticizes the government for imposing "austerity" on the poorest, stating that it is "using divisions between those who have little and others who have even less." CGT 44 is advocating for a different way of distributing the wealth produced in the country. These protests are part of a broader movement by public sector workers across France, who have been increasingly vocal about their concerns over wages, job security, and the state of public services. The demonstrations in Loire-Atlantique are expected to draw significant participation, reflecting the widespread nature of the issues being addressed.
