Update cutoff date set for June 2027
Starting in June 2027, personal computers running outdated versions of Windows will no longer receive updates from Windows Update. This includes systems that have not received security updates since October 2025 and have not enrolled in Microsoft’s Extended Security Update (ESU) program.Connection to Microsoft ends abruptly
Computers not enrolled in the ESU program will remain connected to Microsoft until June 19, 2027, when the connection will be cut off suddenly. This date may come earlier in some regions, such as France, where the exit option is free.Security updates end for unsupported Windows 10
Since October 14, 2025, Windows 10 systems not enrolled in ESU have no longer received security updates. However, these machines still connected to Windows Update could receive antivirus definitions for Microsoft Defender until October 2028. Microsoft explained in a note on October 8 that the digital certificates allowing computers to verify they are communicating with real Microsoft servers will expire on May 17 and June 19, 2027. Without updated certificates, computers will no longer receive any type of update through Windows Update.Supported Windows versions unaffected
The changes in 2027 do not affect Windows 11 25H2 and its future updates. For Windows 11 24H2, users must have received the September 2025 update. Other supported versions of Windows 11 and Windows 10 must have received the July 2026 update to stay current.Outdated systems can still catch up
A supported PC that is behind on updates can still download the required update from the Microsoft Update Catalog after the deadline. However, devices running unsupported Windows versions will lose access to Windows Update services and thus will not receive updates.Free ESU enrollment available until October 2027
Microsoft has extended free ESU enrollment until October 12, 2027, for Windows 10 systems that have not received updates since October 2025. Enrollment is available through Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and requires a Microsoft account.Check update status to stay protected
Users should check their system’s update history in Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security (Windows 10). An update dated July 2026 or later ensures continued protection. Waiting until summer may prevent enrollment if the system is disconnected from Windows Update.
