Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, currently ranked 11th in the world, won his 102nd career title in Beijing on Tuesday, at the age of 39. His opponent in the final, Australian Alex de Minaur, ranked 9th, withdrew at the start of the second set. Djokovic, who has 24 Grand Slam titles, had not won a title since the ATP 250 tournament in Athens in November 2025. This victory marks his seventh title in Beijing in as many participations, bringing him to one title behind Swiss player Roger Federer, who has 103 titles, and seven titles behind American Jimmy Connors, who won 109 titles in the last century. Djokovic is also the oldest player to win a title on the main circuit since Ken Rosewall, who was crowned at 43 years old in Hong Kong in 1977. The match was balanced in the first set, which Djokovic won in a tie-break. The match took an unexpected turn right after the first set. Djokovic received a massage on the court at the level of the chest, and de Minaur left the Central Court to be treated as well. Upon his return to the court, de Minaur was wearing a bandage on his left thigh and appeared more limited in his movements than at the beginning of the match. Despite this, de Minaur saved his game point to lead 1-0 in the second set before heading to the net to signal his withdrawal. This injury comes at a challenging time for de Minaur, who was supposed to continue his quest for one of the eight qualification tickets for the end-of-season Masters in Turin at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai (October 7-18). The final completed the extraordinary turn of events for Djokovic's week in Beijing. Physically struggling at the start of the tournament, the Serb managed to eliminate the world number two, Alexander Zverev, in the quarterfinals. On Monday, in the semifinals, Djokovic led 7-5, 5-3 against Russian Daniil Medvedev (5th) when the latter was disqualified for hitting a ball into the stands after an exchange and accidentally hitting a spectator. Djokovic, who won his 34th match in Beijing without a loss, had not beaten three players from the top 10 in a row since the 2023 Masters. His performance in Beijing has highlighted his resilience and ability to compete at the highest level despite his age and the challenges of the season.
