NVIDIA, a leading manufacturer of graphics processing units (GPUs) used extensively in artificial intelligence (AI) computing, has announced its acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. If the deal is approved by regulatory authorities, it would significantly strengthen NVIDIA’s position in both AI hardware and open-source AI software. NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, stated that the company plans to scale Hugging Face’s platform, enhance its infrastructure, and increase access to AI tools for developers and businesses. Hugging Face is often referred to as the "GitHub for AI," a reference to the popular code-sharing platform GitHub. Like GitHub, Hugging Face allows developers to share, discover, and test open-source AI models. The platform has experienced rapid growth since the rise of generative AI in 2022, with more than 18 million users and three million AI models shared. Additionally, over 200,000 companies are using these models to improve their products and services. Huang emphasized that Hugging Face will continue to operate as an open platform, and users will not be required to use NVIDIA’s products to access its tools. He reiterated his support for the open-source AI ecosystem, referencing a recent letter from industry leaders advocating for the continued development and accessibility of open-source models. NVIDIA has already contributed to Hugging Face by providing over 500 AI models and 250 open datasets, highlighting its long-standing involvement in the open-source community. Analysts believe open-source AI models will become increasingly important, complementing proprietary models developed by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Earlier this month, Hugging Face’s CEO, Clément Delangue, noted that China may be gaining an edge in the AI race due to its strong support for open-source models. NVIDIA had previously invested in Hugging Face, participating in at least one funding round in 2023. Other notable investors in Hugging Face include tech giants such as Google, Amazon, Salesforce, AMD, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm.
