Lewis Hamilton has said that even if Ferrari finishes in the top three of the Formula 1 drivers’ championship this season, it would still be a significant accomplishment, despite the team no longer being in contention for the title. The seven-time world champion is currently 101 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli with nine races left in the season. Hamilton’s first retirement of the year happened in Madrid due to a brake failure, and he has not stood on the podium since the Silverstone race, which was six races ago. Hamilton had previously led the championship after securing his first victory for Ferrari in Barcelona in June. However, he admitted that Antonelli has built a substantial lead, gaining around 40 points in just two races. At the same time, Ferrari has struggled to consistently score points, which has made it harder to close the gap. Hamilton explained that Ferrari’s main goal now is to hold onto second place in the constructors’ championship while trying to catch up with leaders Mercedes. He noted that his former teammate, George Russell, is now 20 points ahead of him and is the favorite to win the title. This means Hamilton’s main competition for the remainder of the season may now be Russell rather than Antonelli. Despite the recent challenges, Hamilton remains confident in Ferrari’s ability to improve. The team has introduced technical upgrades, and he is looking forward to the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, hopeful that the results will start to turn around.
