The production at Fonderie de Bretagne (FDB), a foundry located in Caudan, Morbihan, was halted for nearly six months after a serious fire damaged one of its furnaces in January. The company, which employs around 245 people, has been struggling financially and was placed under judicial restructuring at the start of July due to difficulties in meeting its financial obligations. As a result, the current management has been removed, and the company is now under the control of two judicial administrators tasked with overseeing its recovery.
The administrators revealed on September 11 that three takeover offers have been submitted to save Fonderie de Bretagne. These offers come from industrial players, though the identities of the potential buyers have not been disclosed. The commercial court in Lorient will review the proposals during a hearing scheduled for October 15. Until then, the offers will be examined and could be revised or improved.
Europlasma, a company specializing in decontamination and the production of forged parts for the defense industry, had taken over Fonderie de Bretagne in April 2025. The group had committed to investing 15 million euros over three years at the Caudan site. However, according to the CGT labor union, Europlasma has not fulfilled its financial commitments. In 2025, Europlasma reported a net loss of 35.6 million euros, more than double the loss from the previous year.
Production at FDB has only recently resumed, beginning at the start of July, with just two of the four furnaces operational. The company continues to face significant challenges in restoring full production and ensuring financial stability, as it awaits the outcome of the takeover offers and the court’s evaluation.
