COP17 begins in Armenia

The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity began in Erevan, Armenia, on Monday, October 19. This global summit brings together 196 nations to discuss and agree on measures to protect biodiversity and the natural world.

Critical deadline approaching

The conference has entered a critical phase as the 196 participating nations must reach a final agreement by Friday evening, October 30. This agreement will outline commitments for preserving life on Earth, including strategies to protect ecosystems and species.

Anti-science concerns raised

The first week of the conference was marked by concerns over an anti-science stance. Some delegates expressed worry that misinformation or lack of scientific consensus could hinder the conference’s ability to make meaningful decisions on biodiversity protection.

Funding blockage delays progress

A major obstacle to progress has been the blockage on funding. Several countries have refused to commit to a contributor status, which would help provide financial support to developing nations working to preserve biodiversity. This has slowed negotiations and raised concerns about the conference’s ability to deliver tangible outcomes.
