A tech entrepreneur has introduced a high-end, AI-powered cooling mattress pad called Orion, designed to enhance sleep quality by adjusting temperature during the night. The mattress pad uses a smartphone app to allow users to control the temperature, and it claims to learn from sleep data to optimize the cooling experience. It cools down as the user prepares for sleep and gradually warms up to room temperature as the user approaches waking time, which can make it easier to get out of bed in the morning. The founder, Harry Gestetner, is a 26-year-old entrepreneur who previously sold his company Fanfix for an estimated $65 million when he was just 22. He mentioned that his earlier work on Fanfix left him neglecting his health and sleep, which inspired the creation of Orion. Gestetner is also interested in the longevity movement, which focuses on extending human lifespan and healthspan, and he believes that quality sleep is a key component of this goal. However, he acknowledges that the AI features might not be essential for the mattress pad’s effectiveness. The Orion system requires a control tower that uses water to function, and it can be divided into two zones for couples with different temperature preferences. The accompanying app tracks sleep data, such as time spent in light sleep, deep sleep, REM cycles, and how often the user wakes up. However, this data is stored in the cloud, which raises concerns about data privacy and potential security risks. While Gestetner emphasized that Orion invests heavily in security, he also acknowledged that some level of risk is inherent in any cloud-based system. Although the product has reportedly improved the reviewer’s sleep, its high price—$2,195—makes it unaffordable for most people. Gestetner has mentioned plans to develop a more affordable version of the product, aiming for a price point around $500 in the future. He compared this strategy to how Tesla introduced high-end models like the Roadster before launching more affordable vehicles like the Model 3, suggesting a similar approach for Orion.
