La Déferlante joins La Presse libre

La Déferlante, a quarterly magazine focused on feminist and LGBTQIA+ issues, has joined La Presse libre, a media portal that unites independent media under a single subscription model. This move aims to create a collective response to challenges facing the media industry.

Subscription model unites eight editorial teams

The platform allows users to access the work of eight editorial teams through a single registration and payment. The affiliated media include Mediacités, Next, Politis, Arrêt sur images, Reflets, Rue89 Strasbourg, Rue89 Lyon, and Rue89 Bordeaux.

Response to media challenges and political concerns

The move comes as a response to concerns over the concentration of media by large groups, the decline of press freedom, decreasing subscriptions, and the potential rise of the extreme right in 2027. The statement from the media group highlights their decision to unite in resistance.

La Déferlante's prior collaboration

La Déferlante, launched in 2021, had previously signed an editorial published by La Presse libre to defend the press against technological changes imposed by digital companies, specifically targeting Google's artificial intelligence-generated previews during searches, known as Google AI Overviews.

Subscription campaign and future expansion

La Presse libre is using La Déferlante's membership to launch its second subscription campaign, with the portal indicating that other titles may join the movement during this campaign. The portal has undergone an overhaul by agencies World Watch Web and Seity, as well as web designer Thomas Bonometti.

New features enhance user experience

The update includes a new article page featuring "stories," similar to the "bubble" format on Instagram, to highlight articles from partner media published in the last 24 hours. A feature called "Revue de presse" allows readers to personalize their page with preferred media or topics. Additional updates include videos now being part of the homepage.
