Whale calf rescued in Tahiti

A young whale calf was successfully released back into the ocean on Sunday evening after being stranded in the Papara lagoon near Enrich point. The calf had been in distress since late August when it and its mother became stranded between Papara and Paea.

Rescue team involved

The rescue operation brought together several groups and individuals, including Papara firefighters, Mata Tohora president Agnès Benet, veterinarian Olivier Betremieux, and two freedivers from the Environment Department—Temehani Chand and Ryan Vernaudon. Photographer-videographer Tim McKenna also contributed by using a drone to help guide the calf through the coral patches.

Municipality thanks rescuers

The local municipality expressed its appreciation for the efforts of all those involved in the rescue. They acknowledged the dedication and collaboration of the team that worked to ensure the calf’s safe return to the sea.

Challenges after release

Despite the successful release, the Ocean Guardians Network (RGO) warned that strong ocean swells have made it difficult to move the calf safely beyond the Apatea pass. They emphasized that the calf might return to the area and risk stranding again near the pass.

Public urged to stay alert

The RGO urged the public and local residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of stranded marine life. They provided the contact number 89 57 14 30 for anyone who spots a distressed animal or potential stranding.
