New electric vehicles under 20,000 € become viable for heavy drivers with government aid and discounts, but choosing the right model depends on usage and needs.
Grants for electric vehicles increase
Since September 2026, a new grant called the "grands rouleurs premium" offers up to 8,000 € for purchasing a new electric vehicle. This financial aid aims to encourage more people to switch to electric cars, especially those who drive long distances for work.Eligibility criteria for the grant
The grant is targeted at households with a reference tax income per share between 16,881 and 27,310 €. To qualify, individuals must justify at least 12,000 km per year for professional use. This requirement ensures the aid is directed toward those who can benefit most from an electric vehicle's efficiency.Combining grants and discounts
The "grands rouleurs premium" can be combined with another program called "coup de pouce" to further reduce the cost of electric vehicles. This combination can bring the total discount between 5,200 and 6,030 €, with some models receiving up to 8,000 € in aid. This makes certain electric vehicles more affordable, especially for those who drive frequently.Eligible vehicle specifications
The grant applies to so-called "écoscorés" vehicles, which are typically produced in Europe. These vehicles must have a catalog price below 47,000 € and weigh under 2,400 kg. This ensures the aid supports vehicles that are both environmentally friendly and practical for everyday use.Electric vehicles under 20,000 €
Two electric vehicles, the Hyundai Inster and the Citroën ë-C3 Aircross, now fall below the symbolic 20,000 € threshold when combined with discounts and grants. These models offer different features and are suited for different types of drivers, depending on their needs and driving habits.Hyundai Inster's features
The Hyundai Inster, with a catalog price of 25,350 €, drops to about 17,600 € with a 7% discount. Adding the 6,000 € grant brings the final price under 20,000 €. It offers a 42 kWh battery, 97 hp, and a 320 km average range. The car is agile and equipped with features like keyless entry and One Pedal mode for easier city driving.Citroën ë-C3 Aircross's features
The Citroën ë-C3 Aircross has a catalog price of 26,090 €, which drops to about 19,600 € with a 2% discount. With the 6,000 € grant, it also falls under 20,000 €. It has a 113 hp motor, a spacious interior, and a large trunk of 460 dm³. However, its performance is more measured, and its range is slightly less than the Hyundai model, making it better suited for daily, fragmented trips rather than long highway journeys.
