AI Overviews, a new feature introduced in France on 22 July, have changed the way people interact with search engines, according to Nicolas Nguyen, co-founder of Semji. This feature provides users with AI-generated answers at the top of search results, offering quick responses to common queries. As a result, there has been a noticeable drop in organic clicks, with an average decline of 30% across 500,000 tracked keywords for over 500 French clients in 16 different sectors. The impact is most visible in industries where people typically search for advice before making a purchase, such as finance, health, and insurance, while sectors focused on direct transactions are less affected.
Nguyen explained that AI Overviews have accelerated the "zero-click" phenomenon, where users get the information they need directly from search results without clicking through to a website. However, he noted that this does not necessarily mean a loss of business, as some international clients have successfully adapted to these changes. For marketing teams, the focus has shifted from simply tracking clicks to ensuring that their brand is visible within the AI-generated responses, which can still drive sales.
Nguyen emphasized that being ranked first in Google search results no longer guarantees a click, as AI-generated answers often appear above the top organic result. To adapt, he recommended improving SEO efforts to be cited in these AI responses. This involves focusing on content that explains and advises rather than directly selling products, and also reevaluating performance metrics to track visibility and conversions instead of just traffic volume.
At the upcoming 11th edition of SEO Square, scheduled for 13 and 14 October 2026, Nguyen will discuss strategies for maintaining visibility in the age of AI-driven search engines. The event will feature an opening speech by Fabrice Canel, a panel discussion with companies like DocuSign and Groupe SEB on the value of organic traffic, and presentations by Karine Abbou on AI Overview trends in the U.S., as well as Cyrus Shepard and Neil Patel. The goal of the event is to provide attendees with practical insights on how to measure visibility, prioritize content, and make strategic decisions in the evolving SEO landscape.
