Monfils' retirement confirmed

Gaël Monfils, a 40-year-old French tennis player, officially retired on October 5, 2026, ending his professional career earlier than anticipated. His last match was in the second round of the US Open, where he played against Learner Tien.

Tournament director comments

Cédric Pioline, director of the Rolex Paris Masters, told AFP that he had not heard from Monfils and that the tournament respects the player's personal situation. The organization remains open to adjusting if Monfils reaches out.

Retirement and eligibility rules

Monfils is now listed on the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) list of retired players, which makes him ineligible to compete immediately. To return to the professional circuit, retired players must give six months' notice and undergo a new testing period, making a quick return unlikely.

Monfils' connection to Paris

Monfils had a strong connection to the Parisian Masters 1000, having reached the final in both 2009 and 2010. Despite his early retirement, no official farewell event or tribute has been announced for the tournament.
