Florence museum acquires Giordano painting
The Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence has acquired a painting titled Christ and the Samaritan Woman by Luca Giordano, an Italian Baroque artist known for his dramatic compositions and vivid colors.Painting acquired through private collectors
The acquisition was made by the Amici degli Uffizi, a group of private donors supporting the museum, during the presentation of the artwork at the last TEFAF, a major international art fair held in the Netherlands.Artwork had long history in private hands
The tondo, a round painting format, had been on the art market for over ten years. It was previously owned by the heirs of Andrea and Lorenzo Del Rosso, two Florentine collectors who had safeguarded Giordano's work for more than two centuries before it entered the art market in the 20th century.Painting is part of a pair
Christ and the Samaritan Woman is part of a pair of works by Giordano. Its counterpart, Christ Among the Doctors, was presented at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in early 2022 and also offered during the Florence Biennale in September 2022.Rare technique used in both paintings
Both paintings were created using a rare technique known as "portable fresco," in which paint is applied on a base of lime resting on a wicker structure. This method was intended to make the artworks mobile, allowing them to be displayed in different locations without the need for permanent installation.
