Keanu Reeves in talks for new film role

Keanu Reeves is currently in negotiations to play one of the leading roles in The Gangster, the Cop & the Killer, an English-language remake of a 2019 South Korean film directed by Lee Won-tae. The film is being produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by James Wan.

Role details still unclear

Reeves, known for his role as John Wick in a popular action series, would share the screen with Dong-seok Ma, who played the gangster in the original film. It is still uncertain whether Reeves will portray the cop or the assassin, though he is more likely to take on the role of the police officer from the original version.

Plot of the original film

The original film, which had a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, follows a powerful gang leader who narrowly survives an assassination attempt. The gangster must track down his attacker, while a police inspector believes the assassin is a serial killer known as "K." The two characters team up to find the killer.

Inspiration and production details

The film is loosely based on real events involving South Korean serial killers in the mid-2000s. Sylvester Stallone is involved in the production, and the latest screenplay was written by Eric Pearson, building on earlier drafts by Shay Hatten and Brian Helgeland. James Wan directs and produces the film through multiple production companies.

Reeves' other projects

Reeves recently joined the adaptation of Oliver Lowe’s novel Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller. He will also appear in Shiver, a science fiction film directed by Tim Miller, set for release in August 2027. Additionally, he is expected to be part of The Entertainment System Is Down, directed by Ruben Östlund, a filmmaker who has won the Palme d'or multiple times at Cannes.
