A mother and son were both arrested for drunk driving after a chaotic incident on a French highway, highlighting dangerous family dynamics and legal consequences.
Incident on a French highway
On the night of October 5 to 6, 2026, an incident described by some as a "family affair" occurred on the A6 highway in Saône-et-Loire, France, at the Sablons rest area. A witness reported the vehicle's dangerous behavior, including repeated scraping, accelerations and braking without reason, and the vehicle rolling on its rims with sparks. This prompted the gendarmes of Saône-et-Loire to respond.Driver’s alcohol level exceeds limits
The driver submitted to an alcohol breath test, which showed a level of 0.96 mg/l of exhaled air, far exceeding the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l for regular drivers and the threshold for an offense of 0.40 mg/l. The driver was detained and requested to call his mother to pick him up. When the mother arrived at the rest area, she began to scold her son for being in a state of intoxication.Mother also tested positive for alcohol
A gendarme from the motorized platoon noted that the mother was about to take the wheel in place of her son. A colleague from the PMO (probably the Police Militaire de l'Armée) conducted an alcohol breath test on the mother as well. The mother's test result was 0.46 mg/l of exhaled air, which also exceeded the legal limit and the threshold for an offense.Legal consequences for both
According to her, she had "drunk without knowing that she should drive during the night." The gendarmes responded with a touch of irony, noting that the ethylometer does not have an "unexpected trip" option. Both the driver and the mother were found to be in violation of the law for "driving under the influence of alcohol."Penalties for alcohol-related driving
According to the Road Safety, this type of offense, as outlined in the Road Code, can result in up to three years in prison and a fine of 4,500 euros. Additional penalties may include the confiscation of the vehicle, cancellation of the driving license, a road safety awareness course, a prohibition to drive a vehicle not equipped with a homologated breathalyzer starter, and the withdrawal of six points on the license.
