Toy car models at Paris Motor Show

Toy car models like Hot Wheels, Cars, and Majorette are being highlighted at the Paris Motor Show, which runs from October 12 to October 18. These models are part of a broader discussion on their role in the toy market and their impact on children and the environment.

Development benefits of toy cars

Franck Mathais, a spokesperson for Joué Club, explains that toy cars help develop children's fine motor skills and coordination. Their small size and variety, including imaginative models like dragsters, encourage creativity and imagination in children.

Cultural and financial success

The popularity of these toy cars is also linked to cultural references, such as the Disney film Cars, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Hot Wheels, in particular, has seen strong financial success in France, with sales reaching nearly 6.4 million euros in 2024, a 27% increase from the previous year.

Environmental concerns raised

Environmental concerns have been raised about the materials used in toy cars. Anaïs Uzan, from the Rejoué workshop, points out that the combination of metal and plastic makes many toy cars difficult to recycle. Over 40 million toys are discarded annually in France, contributing to a significant amount of waste.

CO2 impact and consumer behavior

Plastic toy cars have a higher carbon footprint compared to wooden ones, generating 0.79 kg CO2e per year, compared to 0.18 kg CO2e for wooden cars. A survey shows that 87% of the French population considers environmental impact when shopping, and 53% have switched brands due to non-recyclable packaging.

Mattel's environmental goals

The Mattel group, which produces Hot Wheels, has set goals to use 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials by 2030. The company also aims to reduce plastic use in packaging by 25% compared to 2020 levels by the same year.
