The major manufacturers of RAM, including Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, are not in a hurry to adopt the LPCAMM2 format. Although these companies already produce LPDDR5X modules in a modular design, they remain expensive, hard to find, and sometimes underperform compared to LPDDR5X modules that are directly integrated into a system-on-a-chip (SoC), as seen in comparisons between the MacBook Pro and the Framework Laptop 13 Pro. Recently, Samsung announced mass production of LPCAMM2 modules with 96 gigabytes of memory and a speed of 9600 megatransfers per second, addressing one of the format’s shortcomings. On Tuesday, September 8, the Chinese manufacturer Rayson announced its own LPCAMM2 modules with the same specifications: 96 gigabytes and 9600 MT/s. Rayson refers to these modules as a "dual 96" configuration, designed for high-performance laptops and PCs intended for running large language models locally. The company stated it has completed compatibility testing on platforms from major international PC manufacturers, but it has not yet revealed its first customers or provided specific prices or launch dates for the modules. Rayson will offer its LPCAMM2 modules in multiple configurations: 16, 32, 64, and 96 gigabytes, giving original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) more flexibility. The LPCAMM2 format shares the energy efficiency benefits of LPDDR5X, but it is modular and takes up less space on a motherboard compared to traditional SO-DIMM DDR5 modules. However, the distribution of these modules is currently very limited. To date, only Lenovo and Framework have offered consumer laptops with LPCAMM2 modules as an optional upgrade. The limited availability of LPCAMM2 modules is partly due to low production volumes and high prices, which are exacerbated by the ongoing global memory shortage. However, the entry of new players like Rayson into this market is seen as a positive development, potentially increasing competition and improving accessibility for consumers and manufacturers looking for high-performance, space-efficient memory solutions.
