Naomi Osaka made a strong comeback after a shaky second set to defeat Katerina Siniakova in three sets at the US Open. The Japanese tennis star, a two-time US Open champion, had a chance to secure her spot in the third round during the second set but lost four straight games after failing to capitalize on a 5-3 lead. After taking a break to regroup, Osaka regained her composure and dominated the final set, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Her victory set up a match against Belgium’s 23rd seed, Elise Mertens. Osaka entered the match wearing a unique outfit inspired by NBA legend Allen Iverson, and later returned in a white dress decorated with tennis racquets. She took control of the first set quickly, winning it in just half an hour. She looked poised for an easy win after breaking Siniakova’s serve to take a 4-2 lead in the second set. However, Osaka made 20 of her 29 unforced errors in that set, allowing Siniakova to gain momentum. Osaka then bounced back by winning six of the last seven games to secure victory in two hours and two minutes. Speaking after the match, Osaka admitted the contest was "definitely really tough," and she felt "a little bit too hard on myself after opportunities in the second set." She took a bathroom break during the match to reset and said she tried to "just have no regrets" afterward. This win marked the 80th Grand Slam singles victory of her career, making her the second Japanese woman in the Open era to reach that milestone, following Ai Sugiyama. It also marked the first time since 2018 that Osaka has reached the third round at all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same season. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek, the six-time Grand Slam champion, advanced smoothly to the third round by defeating Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-2. The Polish player will now face Czech player Marie Bouzkova in the next round. Swiatek’s only previous US Open title came in 2022. In another dramatic match, American Madison Keys, the 22nd seed at the US Open, narrowly avoided elimination after saving five match points against Hungary’s Anna Bondar. After forcing a third set, Keys faced a double break of serve but managed to stay in the match after Bondar made several unforced errors. Keys eventually won the tie-break 10-5 to claim a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5) victory.
