Danny Jordaan, 75, has been re-elected as president of South Africa's soccer governing body, the South African Football Association (SAFA), despite facing criminal charges related to alleged financial misconduct. In a recent vote, Jordaan defeated his challenger, Sandile Zungu, a businessman and soccer club owner, by a margin of 157 votes to 82. This victory marks Jordaan's fourth term as SAFA president, a position he has held since 2013. He played a central role in organizing the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in South Africa for the first time. Jordaan's tenure has been marked by controversy. In 2015, he was investigated in connection with allegations that South African officials had offered a $10 million bribe to a FIFA official to help secure the 2010 World Cup hosting rights. The claim was part of a U.S. Department of Justice indictment, though South Africa denied the allegations. In 2017, he faced another serious accusation when Jennifer Ferguson, a singer and political activist, claimed he had raped her over two decades earlier. Jordaan denied the claim, and the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence. In 2024, Jordaan was arrested and charged with fraud and theft related to the alleged misuse of approximately $70,000 from SAFA funds during his time as president. He was charged alongside several others, including a former acting CEO of SAFA and the organization's chief financial officer. The charges suggest that Jordaan used SAFA money to hire personal security and a public relations firm to bolster his image following the Ferguson allegations. The case has faced legal delays and has not yet gone to trial. Jordaan and his co-accused have denied any wrongdoing. The recent SAFA election was marked by an atmosphere of tension and intimidation. The national association reported that some voting officials had received death threats, and others were harassed or intimidated. SAFA stated it would report the threats to the police but did not identify the individuals responsible. Despite these challenges, the election proceeded, and Jordaan was re-elected as president.
