Lego PlayStation set released

A Lego PlayStation set, featuring 1,911 pieces and priced at 159.99 euros, allows the construction of a replica of Sony's first console. The set is intended primarily for collectors and reproduces the design of the original PlayStation 1, including two small hidden dioramas that pay homage to Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.

Set remains decorative

Despite its realism and the affection for Sony's first console, the set remains a decorative object that gathers dust. Substance Labs aims to change this with the BrickStation project, which seeks to transform the Lego PlayStation into a functional console.

Swiss team's previous success

This Swiss team, previously behind BrickBoy—a Lego-based Game Boy replica that raised over one million euros on Kickstarter by the end of 2025—is now tackling Sony's home console with the same concept: integrating the necessary electronics into the Lego without altering its appearance.

Technical details revealed

Thomas Bertani, inventor and technical lead of the team, detailed its operation on Friday, October 30, 2026, to the specialized website Time Extension. The team began working based on leaks about the set, even before its release. The BrickStation replaces the small side module dedicated to Ape Escape in the original Lego.

Functionality of BrickStation

This case runs PS1 games through emulation, that is, by imitating the console through software. The Lego console can then be connected to a television via HDMI, while the games are loaded from a microSD card. USB and Bluetooth controllers are supported, as are the original memory cards of the PlayStation 1.

Enhanced details and features

The designers have also gone to great lengths for the details. The Power button on the Lego actually turns on the brick console, while a small speaker and motor reproduce the noise and vibrations of the CD drive at startup. BrickStation of course does not have a functional CD drive.

Playing PS1 games

To play old PS1 games, therefore, an external CD drive will be needed to copy the data from the original discs in the form of files to transfer to the microSD card of the Lego console, to launch them via the built-in emulator. You now have a working PS1 in bricks, without modifying the set.

Additional details and design

It is enough to put back the original Ape Escape module to get the Lego as it was designed. A fun detail, the BrickStation kit adds exactly 83 Lego pieces, including an exhibition memory card. The total thus reaches 1,994 pieces, which is the year of the first PlayStation's launch in Japan.

Project still in development

BrickStation is still at the prototype stage and its Kickstarter campaign is in preparation. Substance Labs has not announced the price or the launch date. You can sign up on the project's pre-launch page to be notified of its opening.
