Epic Games updates its launcher

Epic Games has introduced a redesigned version of its launcher, a platform that offers access to the Epic Games Store, game libraries, social features, and tools for developers. This update aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience compared to the previous version.

AI used in development

Epic Games claims the new launcher was developed using generative artificial intelligence, allowing the team to create a more intuitive and responsive interface. According to the company, this approach made the development process faster and more efficient.

Efficiency and platform support

Martin Keely, vice president and general manager of the Epic Games Store, explained that AI tools helped a small team rewrite the source code and deploy the launcher on multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac, and soon Linux. This approach allowed for quicker development and testing across different systems.

AI in creative projects

Bloomberg reported that Epic developers are using AI tools like Claude, an AI assistant from Anthropic, to streamline development processes. A forthcoming Star Wars/Marvel crossover project is expected to be developed entirely without manual coding, according to the report.

Focus on code and design

Keely clarified that the AI was primarily used to improve the efficiency of the code and architecture, not the visual design. The graphical elements of the launcher were still handled by the design team, although the Star Wars/Marvel project might use AI for its graphics, as reported by Bloomberg.

Epic’s AI transparency and competition

Epic Games has become more open about its use of AI, particularly in projects like Fortnite skins and the new launcher. Despite these advancements, the company still faces challenges in competing with Steam, the long-standing dominant platform for PC gaming. The new launcher is now available for testing and aims to be more ergonomic, customizable, and community-focused.
