Seamus Coleman has not been selected in the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Kosovo, Israel, and Austria. The 37-year-old defender, who recently ended a 17-year career with Everton after making 433 appearances, has been without a club since the end of the 2025-26 season. Coleman was part of the squad for June's international friendlies, but he has now been left out of the 26-player group for the four Nations League matches. The Irish team will face Kosovo on 24 September, then Israel on 27 September and 4 October, and Austria on 1 October.
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson explained that Coleman's absence was a mutual decision. "It is my intention in whatever shape or form that he [Coleman] would be with us in the future, hopefully as a player," Hallgrimsson said. "His intention is to play, he's keeping fit but he hasn't been training with a club so we felt together, and it was more his decision, that it would be appropriate he sit out this one, mostly because he thought it was unfair to other players that he would be taking up a place."
Several other players are also absent due to injury or lack of club affiliation. Robbie Brady is not in the squad as he is also without a club, and captain Nathan Collins is missing due to a calf injury sustained in a Premier League match. Other players not considered include Evan Ferguson (ankle), Josh Cullen (knee), Jack Taylor (knee), Mikey Johnston (ankle), and Oisin McEntee. QPR defender Jimmy Dunne has also been ruled out due to a muscular injury.
New call-ups include Liam Kitching, a left-sided centre-back on loan from Coventry City to Sheffield United, as well as Joel Bagan of Cardiff City and Owen Elding of Sligo Rovers, who are in contention for their first international caps. The full squad includes goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher, Max O'Leary, and Gavin Bazanu, along with defenders such as Dara O'Shea, Jake O'Brien, and Jimmy Dunne, and midfielders like Jayson Molumby and Jason Knight. Forwards include Troy Parrott, Adam Idah, and Chiedozie Ogbene, among others.
