Four men were sentenced to prison after a violent incident involving tear gas at Heathrow Airport’s car park in December. The event caused serious health issues, led to an extended closure of the terminal, and left several people hospitalized. Tyrone Richards, 31, Anton Clarke-Butcher, 25, Omoneke Whyte, 31, and Denzel Eduardo, 29, pleaded guilty to affray at Isleworth Crown Court. They were sentenced after being found responsible for targeting individuals with serious and sustained violence. The incident took place on 7 December at around 8am in a lift at an airport car park. Three masked men in dark clothing were believed to have sprayed CS gas—also known as tear gas—inside the lift. The lift contained two women who had just arrived on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, South Africa, and two men who had come to meet them. While it is unclear who exactly deployed the gas, all four men admitted to being involved under a legal principle known as "joint enterprise," meaning they were considered to have participated in the act together. The gas spread from the lift to the ground floor, causing severe health problems for people nearby, especially at a Caffè Nero coffee shop. A barista described coughing and vomiting blood, saying she felt "fine one minute and then almost instantly unwell." The gas also forced Terminal 3 into lockdown, causing travel disruptions including delays to shuttle buses and trains. One customer service agent described the event as "terrifying," saying she felt dizzy and feared she would pass out while helping a woman in a wheelchair who was struggling to breathe. The group followed the two women to a taxi forecourt and stole their suitcases, which have never been recovered. Judge Kwame Inyundo noted that the men showed a "particular and determined interest" in the luggage. During the confrontation, CS gas was sprayed directly into one woman’s face at close range, causing her to choke and cough. Richards was jailed for 27 months, while Whyte and Eduardo each received 23 months, and Clarke-Butcher was sentenced to 21 months. All four were present in court via video link from different prisons.
