New phone use rules for drivers

Starting on November 1, 2026, drivers in Tarn-et-Garonne who use their phones while driving could face an administrative suspension of their driver’s license, lasting up to six months. This new rule was introduced by the local prefect in response to a rise in phone-related driving violations in the region.

Increase in phone use violations

In 2025, 2,574 violations for using a phone while driving were recorded in Tarn-et-Garonne, compared to 2,284 in the previous year. Prefect Sébastien Cauwel announced the stricter measures to address this growing issue and improve road safety.

Scope of the new sanctions

The new measure applies to any use of a phone while driving, including making calls or performing other actions on the device. The suspension period can range from 15 days to six months, depending on the severity of the violation.

Awareness period before enforcement

The prefecture has announced a period of awareness until October 31, 2026, before the new sanctions are fully implemented. This time is intended to inform drivers about the upcoming changes and encourage compliance with the new rules.

Road safety concerns

The prefecture highlights that phone use while driving is a "major factor of distraction" and can lead to serious accidents. Since January 2026, Tarn-et-Garonne has recorded 200 bodily injuries, resulting in 255 injured people and 20 deaths, including four in September alone.

Goal of the new measure

The authorities aim to increase the consequences for drivers who are fined for phone use while driving. They emphasize the need to "responsabilize drivers" and reduce the risk of accidents on the department's road network.
